This month's featured photo is "Supplication."  I chose this photo to feature this month, as it has the honor of being selected as a part of the 2016 Juried Exhibition web catalog at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel-by-the-Sea, available June 11- July 24, 2016.  Click here for their web catalog, and if you are in the area, there are some selections from the Exhibition on display in the gallery.

SupplicationSupplicationVenice is a miracle of invention and reinvention. It’s very existence was an invention, and it’s history since has been a roller coaster of prosperity and power and struggle for survival. Reinventing itself as a tourist mecca brought back prosperity to some, survival to many, and left the neglected much as they have been for over 1000 years. Turning the corner on a small street I found this woman who symbolized the sad reality of our world.

On my second trip to Venice, Italy, 10 years after the first, I found the difference in the city striking. What had been a vital and multi-dimensional city was now divided into a “Disneyland “ for tourists and run down, or abandoned areas housing residents too poor to move to the mainland.  Turning the corner on a small street I found this woman who symbolized the change I was seeing all around me.
